This is when you go from being right, to overreacting.

Hi there!

First off, let’s talk about your use of the word “overreacting”.

Basically what you’re saying to all the people offended by this lack of equality on the gaming sphere is that we’re behaving in a way to which you find inconvenient and therefore it must be wrong.

It does not necessarily mean that there is nothing there to be upset about, it just means that you don’t understand and moreso you don’t try to understand.

This is not like generalisations relating to claims that all men are evil, all women are good, because a guy cut you off in a drive-thru.

This is people openly demonstrating their disappointment at a culture that directly alienates them, it’s not an overreaction.

You know what was an overreaction? A ridiculous amount of ‘dudebro’s’ and ‘assholes’ abusing Anita because she was disappointed there were no female protagonists!

How the tweets subtly display sexism?

1) “It’s roleplaying, who cares about the gender you play as”

Hi. Obviously, we do.

It’s easy to say ‘it doesn’t matter who you play as’ when they majority of characters reflect you. This is not the case with the female gamers when there is no reflection of themselves in any game. Of course you’re not going to care who you play as if a character who looks like you is always the main choice. Sarkeesian is pointing out that Microsoft gave female gamers… no choice.

(Please note: I am aware there are games which successfully portray females and/or give the option to female protagonists. We are not discussing ‘that one game where you play as a girl’. We are talking about a specific group of titles that featured no female protagonists. )

The problem with this post is that female gamers constantly played as the stereotypical white, cis, male. But it gets boring, repetitive and old ‘not caring about who you play as’ when you don’t even have the option to play as yourself.

If the poster really didn’t care about who the protagonist was, he would be cheering that someone wants to do something different, not trying to shhhh them to accepting what they already have.

The idea of female protagonists annoys him because he already has what he wants, why should female gamers try to voice their opinion about what they want?

It’s sexist because he’s directly trying to undermine the voice of a woman who wants to see more women in gaming by shhhing her into accepting what she already has.

2) “Having a female protagonist just for the sake of having one is just as bad as not having one at all”

This person has deflected the idea of female protagonists onto another sexist ploy of ‘where women belong’. What they’re essentially saying is that men belong in every game, ever. Women, do not. (pssst, btw, that’s sexist).

A game is made of many crucial parts including graphics, gameplay and story. But all of these things should revolve around the character you are playing as.

Female gamers aren’t asking to be just thrown a female protagonist as a bone into a situation that doesn’t make sense (eg, a cheerleader in a war zone) they’re asking for developers to start developing games around a female protagonist.

We currently have white, cis, male stereotypes as the dominant protagonist just for the sake of having one. Why not a black, female, or queer character for the sake of having one?

It’s like saying having a POC character just for the sake of one would be silly (pssst, btw, that’s racist). A storyline doesn’t revolve around the fact that you’re white, why would it have to revolve around the fact that you’re black? Sure there’s a small amount of dialogue or small plot points that can shift, but in a game where you’re running from A to B it doesn’t matter what you look like, therefore it shouldn’t be such a big deal to ask for a female.

(Again, I KNOW there are games out there featuring these protagonists already. However, we are not discussing ‘that one game where you play as a girl’. We are discussing a group of titles that feature no female protagonists).

It is sexist to claim that you need a good reason to have a female protagonist.

3) “Big deal. Video games are not social movement groups. And I can enjoy a game no matter what gender it is”.

Any form of mass entertainment media has a direct effect to the participants of it’s audience. If a game alienates it’s audience because they possess black skin, a vagina, or like the same sex, then it effects the people playing (duh.). The effects of video games has been examined and analysed a thousand times regarding violence, rape culture, and yes, sexism. Because they do effect not only how people perceive each other, they effect how people perceive themselves.

Junot Diaz once wrote: ‘If you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves.’ and Microsoft’s lack of inclusion for female protagonists is a direct denial of a reflection of themselves in the popular culture of gaming.

Sarkeesian was not claiming that Microsoft needed to turn all COD boys into feminist ally’s by having women as all protagonists, in every game EVER. She was merely expressing her disappointment that a major gaming console denied to include any female leads in it’s gaming line up.

Claiming that the inclusion of female protagonists involves turning gaming into a social movement is an exaggeration of sexist behaviour that labels male protagonists as the norm and anything else as extremely not normal.

Also, if they really didn’t care who they were playing as, they wouldn’t be so butt-hurt that someone mentioned there wasn’t any girls, and like number 1 it’s sexist because he’s directly trying to undermine the voice of a woman who wants to see more women in gaming by shhhing her into accepting what she already has, because he’s happy with what he has.

She was NOT claiming every game needed a female lead, or that games with male protagonists are bad, or that everyone is evil and bad for not including more women.

She was just expressing disappointment that a major gaming console had failed to include any female lead games in it’s demo lineup.

And some people couldn’t handle it.

…These kinds of responses are the product of a culture that devalues women and their voices.

How could we improve this? Why don’t we try including more female (and POC and queer) characters and stories in our media. Like, I dunno, making a couple of games with a female protagonist?

Why does it matter that XboxOne had no female lead demo games? Because people are still so violently resistant to the idea that such a thing is possible. We should have a variety of stories in our media, and that isn’t going to happen unless we keep pointing out that it isn’t.

We need a new normal. A normal where this background noise stops being expected and starts being an outrage.

Because right now it just feels like another day of being a woman on the internet. So we ain’t done yet.
