Matt Bertz walks us through the first play-through of the game.
It’s a bit of a read, but well worth it, wetting your tongue with an appetite for the games release. There are no abundances of weaponry, ammunition or strength, everything is earnt and scavaged. Ubisoft drives home the bleak reality of a post-apocalyptic situation, in ways gamers have never seen before.
“My hands-on demo of the game begins with the main character returning to the outskirt of his hometown city of Haventon. He flew out east right before the catastrophe hit, and it has taken him a year to trek back. Though encounters with fellow survivors are rare, he holds out hope that his wife and young daughter are still alive. All he’s managed to retain during his journey is a camcorder, a few batteries, a rope, and a handgun with an empty clip.
The once bustling city is in complete shambles. Making into the city center is tricky considering the one bridge into town has been torn and mangled by an earthquake. Getting to the other side won’t be easy. I begin navigating the street full of abandoned cars and finally spot a ladder up the side of one of the bridge supports. It looks like I have to take the acrobat’s way across the bridge.
As I start to navigate the twisted remains of the bridge, I realize this everyman doesn’t have any Nathan Drake or Ezio Auditore genes in his makeup. He’s a sure climber, but as I ascend each rung of the ladder, my stamina bar drops down slightly. If I drain the stamina bar completely, my health will start to diminish as well and I may plummet violently back down to earth. It’s key to chart out a course before moving and to take any opportunity catch your breath and restore your stamina.
Halfway through climbing, jumping, and swinging through the mangled metal beams, I realize the next climbing segment isn’t going to allow me to take it slow. My stamina drains completely before I have a chance to reach safety, and I’m forced to repeated pull the right trigger to make the character climb more quickly before the health meter drains completely. When I finally reach the ledge, I’m forced to use my last bottle of water and can of food to replenish my health.
Once I safely reach the other side and head into the sewers, I have my first run-in with another survivor. My presence perturbs this edgy character to the point that he draws a gun on me, which makes my decision to scoot quickly past him and continue my journey all the more decisive.
I emerge from the sewers a few blocks from the apartment. Another mentally disturbed survivor approaches me with a machete drawn. I instinctively raise my firearm to stop him in his tracks. He has no idea the gun isn’t loaded, so while he stands with his hands raise I move in and clock him with the butt of the gun. As restitution for his act of aggressive, I steal his and find my first bullet in his pockets. This commodity will come in handy in this dangerous city.
Further ahead I encounter my first gang. This duo moves toward me with intent to injure, but stop in their tracks when I raise up my firearm. I try to pistol whip one of them. Before I can land the blow the other moves in and stabs me with his weapon when I’m exposed. With the situation spiraling out of control I decide now is a good time to use the bullet to even the odds. After the first guy hits the pavement with a bullet in his head I disarm the second guy.
With my health bar dangerously low, I thankfully come across a medkit. I don’t hesitate to patch my wound, but I should have exercised restraint because right before I reach the apartment I walk past a mother pleading for help for her dying son. Had I not used the medkit, the Ubisoft Shanghai rep says I could have saved the boy. In doing so, the mother would have shared some vital information about the cataclysmic event and given me another replay token that would allow me to restart at a checkpoint if I succumb to the dangers of the city.
I finally reach my destination, and the apartment building is still standing. Unfortunately, there are no signs of life within the abode. I find a note on the mantle from the character’s significant other. The letter says the wife and child were ushered off to the emergency shelter, but it’s dated a year ago. It looks like the journey to find his loved ones is only beginning.”

Not quite sure exactly what this concept art is for - Morgan Yon is apparently working with Ubisoft, and Darkworks is apparently working on I Am Alive.
However, this concept art doesn’t look anything like the I Am Alive gameplay or trailer.
Perhaps it’s a new project? This image was WAY to good not to share.

Starring… ME!
They told me to pull an angry face :/
I had an absolute blast tonight at the Ubisoft ‘Ubinight’.
Sorry for the terrible quality but I’m in bed and my makeup’s worn off but that’s my Assassins Creed: Revelations portrait. And yes, That’s ME in the assassins gear!! :D I’ll upload it later when I get the chance.
Games that were available to demo, the ones in bold are the ones I had a chance to play:
You Can Dance: Abba
Black Eyed Peas Experience
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, The Game
Rayman: Origins
[Not going to lie this was the most frustrating game I’ve ever encountered in my entire life, and that’s what I thought about the first Rayman too.
However, that being said, fans of the game won’t be disappointed, and the concept art is absolutely mind blowing!]
Motion Sports: Adrenaline
[This one reinstated my feelings about xbox360 and Kinect by freezing and not selecting multiple times. To be fair, it was a White xbox360, and the lighting was bad, but it wasn’t a stand out game for me. It was alright, but not something I’d purchase or play over and over]
Just Dance 3
[This was just like the other Just Dances for me, just with different songs (however, it does have ‘Let’s go to the Mall!’ from How I Met Your Mother as a choice, which I think is pretty epic… and now it’s stuck in my head forever…). Same old same old, though more of a party favour than something you’d play on your own (Unless you’re into that kind of thing of course, It just seemed to rely on multiple partners)]
Assassins Creed: Revelations (Online Multiplayer)
[I haven’t played any of the Brotherhood Multiplayer (I know I know, shut up, I got sidetracked by Bioshock 2 ok.) so I can’t really compare it, but apparently there are a few subtle differences in the way the screen’s set-up and a few more characters. I played this one quite a few times though, and it was a lot of fun everyone getting really competitive on 8 Playstations in the same room :)]
Driver: San Francisco (Online Multiplayer)
[I had low expectations of this one (oh, another car racing game…) but I REALLY enjoyed it. We played the trail multiplayer game (where you have to stay behind the yellow car in order to pick up the ‘trail’ and gain the most points) which was soooo much fun trying to compete with others, as well as the aerial selection of vehicles which was really cool!]
Rabbids: Alive and Kicking (for the Xbox 360 Kinect)
[Pretty fun, Stomp-a-Mole type game where the Rabbids would pop up from whatever surface you’re standing on. The Move had a bit of trouble picking us up at first, but again I think that was due to poor lighting. Nice fun arcad-y type of game]
PowerUp Heros
[For a Kinect game, this one realllllyyy impressed me. Specific movements create specific moves on screen, raising the arms then pushing the hands outwards in a smooth motion, releases a fireball at your enemy, or raising a leg kicks them (I just kept yelling ‘Berserker Barrage!!). There were a few issues with picking up the moves but since there was a huge crowd behind us, that could be the cause, and again lighting (for some reason they dimmed all the lights at about 7:30 :/. I would definitely pick this one up, but again it relies on having someone there with you for it to be most enjoyable]
Track Mania 2: Canyon
[Addictive yet annoying computer game. The car track is similar to Mario Karts where there are a LOT of places you can fall down, and getting the right angle is crucial. Once it hooked you, you’d play for a while, but ultimately I couldn’t even finish the first course.]
And that was my night!
Coupled with the free drinks and food, plus a lot of trailers and enjoyable nerdy company and a few obscure freebies (the Zoo girls were there, so we got free magazines and… hair gel?) it made for a really awesome evening, definitely glad I didn’t let uni work ruin my life by taking me away from this.
Sorry for the massive post, if you have any questions you know where my ask box is, I’ve got a few trailers I’ve been wanting to put them up so I’ll see if I can embed them in the next few days :D
